High computer temperatures are a very common problem. When more processes are requested from the CPU, CPU clock starts to allow more calculations to be performed per second. A higher frequency also means that more electricity will flow through the circuits., which will make the CPU hotter. Then, the more processes require CPU time, the hotter the CPU will be.

Besides CPU usage, cooling is a factor that can lead to higher or lower CPU temperatures. The better the cooling used, the lower the temperature of the high-performance CPU. If the temperatures are too high, the system becomes sluggish and overheated parts are likely to fry. Most CPUs and GPUs are not designed to exceed 100ºC. Therefore, are equipped with a shutdown mechanism when these temperatures are exceeded. If the system is driven beyond this temperature, will turn off suddenly as if a plug has been unplugged and display a blue screen with a high temperature error. While many MB turn off automatically when overheated; reaching that point often inflicts small damage that can add up over time, and constantly trading near that limit will do the same. Keep CPU temperature low / GPU

There are many ways to keep computer temperatures low. You could buy a more powerful fan with more revolutions per minute (rpm) which translates into more airflow and thus cool down the CPU. There are also more advanced fans that use liquid cooling.. As a liquid passes over the heat sink, more heat is transported and, Thus, CPU cools down. Another method is to use a forced inlet fan in conjunction with an outlet fan.. Forced intake brings in more cool air and the exhaust fan draws in warm air. A cooling pad can be used in place of the intake fan.

The above methods have something in common. Everyone needs you to dig in your pockets and get some new gear.. For a laptop, they may even be impossible to use. If you use your computer to render graphics, stream videos, playing video games and other energy-intensive operations, the computer is likely to overheat and shut down after starting a blue screen. Method 1: increase air flow

Taking out the hot air and bringing in the cold air is what cools the computer. Keep the computer in an open area with the intake and exhaust fans oriented in a fairly good airflow direction..

On most laptops, the plug is usually at the bottom, rear or both. If you don't have a cooling pad on hand, it will often make a noticeable difference if you can fit something under the laptop to give it some space between the bottom of the laptop and the surface it sits on. Even a couple of pencils under the corners can improve airflow enough to prevent overheating.

If you are going to use your CPU for extremely heavy operations, you can open the case from the side (or from the bottom in the case of some laptops) to allow better airflow during such demanding times.

Method 2: keep your computer clean

One of the main reasons a computer overheats is dust build-up and clogged vents.. Clean your fans regularly. You can do this by injecting compressed air into all vents and, if you can open the case, do it also on the motherboard, since the charges on the dust particles can cause a short circuit and, Thus, an overheating.

Make sure to do this while the computer is off and the AC and battery have been removed. While blowing on the fan, make sure it is not turning too much because it could be damaged if it is turned beyond the revolutions per minute (rpm) predicted.

Method 3: manage space and cabling in the computer

Take some time to open the side of the computer and route the cables as neatly as possible and increase the air gap in the computer, especially around the processor and GPU. Method 4: use thermal paste

If the machine is older and the CPU thermal paste is dirty or dry, lacks the ability to conduct heat from the GPU or CPU properly. Thermal paste is usually placed between the heat sink and the heating surface (CPU o GPU). It may be worth taking the heatsink out of the processor and reapplying some thermal paste. Be sure to clean up all the old thermal paste before applying the new one to avoid uneven heat transfer. Also make sure the heatsink is firmly screwed to the CPU or GPU.

Method 5: get rid of the processor

This is a bit more complicated than other methods. Subversion is a process that reduces excess “voltage” given to the CPU by software. This is widely used as a cooling solution. Subversion is said to NOT compromise performance at all. Underclocking y overclocking (clock speeds) is what is responsible for performance. We recommend subversion to anyone who is confident and knowledgeable enough to do it.. The benefits easily outweigh the risks.

  1. Download and install these utilities:

    RMclock v.2.35 – (cpu clock utility) from here

    ORTHOS CPU loader: (used to stress the CPU and test stability) from here

    HWmonitor – (To monitor temperatures. Choose between 32/64 bits in the upper left corner) from here

  2. Run the ORTHOS CPU loader. This handy program will simulate full CPU load for both cores. Click the start button and let it run for 10 minutes. Notice how times skyrocket to around 70-90Oc in HWmonitor. After it finishes loading the CPU for 10 minutes, stop the program and record the maximum temperature.

  3. Start the RMc clock. Click on the tab “Advanced CPU Settings”. The latest version of RMclock should automatically detect your CPU. If that is not the case, click the radio button “Mobile” near the bottom and check “Apply these settings at startup”. Now press the «Apply» button. If it asks you to restart the program, do it. After it has been rebooted, go to tab “CPU information”. Check that it shows the correct processor you have. On this page you will also see a bunch of digits moving up and down on your CPU.

  4. Double click on the Profile tab and then on the sub-profile “Performance on Demand”.

  5. – Mark “Use P state transitions” for both AC power and battery

  6. – Check all possible index boxes, be sure to scroll down and click the others

  7. – Click Apply when done.

  8. * AMD users should mark P-state transistors for better undervoltage

  9. Return to the main profile page … Change the current profile in the drop down box to “Performance on demand” for both AC power and battery. Make sure all the boxes in the index are checked. Uncheck the option “Automatic VID adjustment for intermediate states” at the bottom and press the Default button. Factory voltages should now appear. Click Apply.

  10. On the main profile page, you will see different multipliers and voltages. Start lowering the voltage of the highest multiplier. Always click Apply for the new voltage to take effect and then perform the stability test below. Keep doing this every time the voltage drops.

  11. Open ORTHOS and HWMonitor again.

  12. Go to the tab “CPU information” the RMclock (you can also see the times and statistics here).

  13. Set the test type to “Small FFT – Stress CPU” to focus the test on the CPU.

  14. Perform the ORTHOS stress test during 45 minutes or more

  15. If it doesn't hang when the stability test is performed, then you can go down. We suggest you go down 0.025v each time until BSOD (blue screen of death) or give a warning error.

  16. If a blue screen appears, means you have reached your limit and the voltage is too low. Once it restarts from the BSOD, it should revert to the last stable voltages. Keep track of good voltages / bad on paper.

  17. If you receive an ORTHOS hardware error or warning: its voltage is also too low. Turn up the voltage and try again.

  18. Once you've found your unstable voltage, we suggest you turn up the voltage by 2 Steps. This will take a safe margin away from your unstable voltage to ensure stability.. Most people are able to obtain from 0,150 a 0,250 V less than your default voltages for the highest multiplier. It all depends on the tolerances of your processors.

  19. To make the most of the undervoltage, you can also reduce the other multipliers to their optimal voltages.
