DST hard drive short test failed

All hardware components are important to the operation of the computer or laptop. If one of the components is not working properly, the BIOS or UEFI will notify you. There are different HDD problems, including mechanical problems, electrical and logic. Then, What is the difference between them? The mechanical problem includes a problem with the board, head, actuator arm or shaft. The electronic problem includes a problem with the platter and the logic problem includes problems with the partitions, volumes and hard disk.

One of the hard drive problems is an error: 2000-0151 Hard disk DST short test failed. The error 2000-0151 indicates that your hard drive (HDD) has failed and may be near the end of its useful life. Regardless of whether you have hard drive problems or not, you must implement a backup and restore strategy. In case of failure, you can restore your data from your backup. Imagine the following scenario, you are using the hard drive of 2 TB where you stored all your personal or business data. What's more, implemented real-time backup on NAS (network attached storage) or cloud storage. Your HDD stopped working. You are not worried because you have a backup of your data, that you can restore in no time. You will feel very sad if you don't have a backup, you will probably pay a lot of money to restore your data, or you will continue your work without data. Backup is the best practice for your home or business infrastructure, so don't ignore doing it. You can backup your data to an external hard drive, NAS or cloud storage.

This problem occurs on the hard drive, regardless of whether you are using a computer or laptop. Please note that this problem is not based on the operating system, but on the hardware. We have created some solutions for you, including logical troubleshooting and the last one is to replace the hard drive with a new one. In the end, you should be ready to change your hard drive, because as we said 2000-0151 the error indicates that your hard drive (HDD) has failed and may be near the end of its useful life.

Method 1: run the diagnostic tool

If you are not sure there is a problem with your hard drive, you must run the diagnostic tool for your hard drive. How will i do it? All vendors provide official software to test your hard drive. We will show you how to run the WD Diagnostic Tool on Windows 10 using WD 1TB hard drive. If you can start Windows on your computer, you will need to download and run this software. If you can't start Windows on your computer, you will need to connect the hard drive to another computer or laptop and install the software on that computer or laptop.

3. Download Lifeguard diagnostic data for Windows

4. Run Data Recovery Diagnostics for Windows

5. Select your hard drive. In our example it is WD10EFRX-68PJCN0.

6. Right click on WD10EFRX-68PJCN0 and choose Run Diagnostic

7. Choose a Quick Scan and click Start. You can also choose the extended test for your hard drive. We only show you how to test the hard drive with the tool

8. Wait until the WD Diagnostic Tool finishes the quick scan

9. Check the test results. In our example, the hard drive works fine and we don't have any errors. In your example, you will probably see errors stating that you need to replace your hard drive

SMART (self-monitoring technology, analysis and reports) monitors the performance and calibration characteristics of the selected unit and predicts imminent unit failure. Each monitored characteristic is called an attribute.

11. Click ok

Method 2: reinstall Windows

This may be a strange solution, but few users fixed the problem with hard drive formatted hard drive and clean OS, drivers and app installation. We recommend that you try this solution, it is much better to try a solution than to buy the new hard drive. We recommend that you install Windows 10. If you don't like Windows 10 for their own reasons, do not install pre-Windows operating systems 7. Why? Microsoft stopped supporting Windows XP and Windows Vista.

Method 3: CHKDSK / R

When you decide to configure the partition, letters, volumes or other settings for your hard drive or SSD, you can do it using a graphical interface or a command line interface. One of the tools that we will use in this method is VERIFY DISK (CHKDSK / R). In case you have system file corruption problem or cannot write or read data from hard drive, you will need to do CHKDSK / R. Check Disk is a utility that will help you find bad sectors and fix them in case they need to be repaired . The procedure to run chk disk is the same for all operating systems from Windows XP to Windows 10.

Method 4: retrieve data

As we said at the beginning of this article, the hard drive does not start Windows if there are logical problems. In case the hard drive does not work due to logic problems, you will not be able to access your data, due to volume or partition corruption. If you have implemented a backup and restore strategy in your business or home environment, you should be glad and ignore this method.

In case you have not implemented the backup and restore strategy and your hard drive is still working, you will need to recover data from damaged hard drive or partition. But, How will you do it if you can't boot your windows? You will have to take a hard drive from your laptop or computer and connect it to another laptop or computer. In case you don't know how to do it, consult an IT professional. If you know how to do it, follow the procedure below. After connecting the hard drive to a laptop or computer, you will need to run the software to retrieve your data. This method is compatible with the operating system from Windows XP to Windows 10.

We will show you how to do it using Recuva software.

1. Open internet browser (Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Edge u otro)

2. Open the Recuva website at this LINK and download Recuva

3. Install Recuva

4. Run Recuva

5. Click Next under Welcome to the Recuva Wizard

6. In File Type, choose what type of files you are trying to recover and click Next. In this method, we will try to recover all files, including images, song, documents, videos, archives and emails. You can show what you want.

7. To File location, choose where the files were located and click Next. In our example, we want to recover the data from the Recycle Bin. In our example, we only need the data that we deleted before the hard drive stopped working. You can choose what you want.

8. In the next window, choose Deep Scan and click Start. Then, What is a deep scan? Recuva's Deep Scan option helps you find even more files buried on your hard drive or removable drives. It takes longer but it's worth it.

9. Wait until Recuva finishes scanning

10. Once the search is complete, you will see a list of files that Recuva has found. Just check the files you want to recover and click the Recover button

Method 5: replace hard drive

Before buying the hard drive, We recommend that you check if your hard drive is under warranty. How will i do it? We'll show you how to check your WD hard drive's warranty. First, you must locate the serial number. You can do it in two ways. One is to read the serial number on the hard drive cover. Another way is to do it through the provider's software. We will show you how to do it using the WD Lifeguard Diagnostic for Windows that you downloaded in the Method 1.

1. Run Data Lifesaver Diagnostic for Windows and check the serial number In our example, the serial number for WD 1TB is WD-WCC4J2035069.

3. Open the WD support website at this https://support.wdc.com/warranty/warrantystatus.aspx?lang = en

4. Choose your country and enter the serial number of WD disk number

5. Click Submit and check your warranty status. In our example, the WD hard drive warranty 1 TB RED expired on 22/03/2017.

Since our disc is not under warranty, we will have to buy another. Before buying the hard drive we recommend that you consult the technical documentation of your motherboard. There are two different types of hard drives, including ATA HDD / IDE and SATA HDD. ATA hard drives / IDE are history, but if you are using an older computer, you will have to buy an ATA hard drive / HERE. There are four different types of SATA hard drives, including SATA 1, SATA 2, SATA 3 and SATA 3.1. The main difference between them is the transfer speed. If your motherboard supports SATA 2 HDD, no need to buy SATA 3 HDD, why SATA 3 HDD will work with SATA port limitation 2.
