Users experience the error “0x80042302” when they try to restore a Windows image on their PC. The mechanism through which a system image is restored is called System Restore. The full error message is:
'System image restore failed. Error details: a Volume Shadow Copy Service component encountered an unexpected error. Check the application event log for more information. (0x80042302) »
System Restore allows users to restore Windows state from a previously saved image. This feature does not require a large amount of space on your computer and is also quite easy to set up. Up to now, the restoration process using System Restore is very simple and does not involve technicalities.
This bug became more apparent after the Fall Creators Update of 1709. The backup of the system image (SIB) has become obsolete. This means that Microsoft has stopped development and support of the feature, but still available on multiple PCs.
Continuing, there are some solutions for this problem. Please note that the workarounds are different from the fixed solutions (fixed solutions are those in which the problem is completely solved and alternative solutions present ways to avoid the problem and accomplish the task at hand). We cannot find solutions because the service itself is depreciated.
Solution 1: use a third party alternative
Since the service itself depreciates, it is better if a third party alternative is used. What does depreciated mean? It means that the tool is still present in Windows but its development and support are stopped. It will use the default tool and if an error is induced (as in this case with 1709), you will have to look for other alternatives because there will be no development on this issue.
You can turn to third-party alternatives that work just as well. One of these alternatives is Macrium Software. You can google it, download it and follow the simple on-screen instructions to get the job done.
Solution 2: check if services are activated
One reason you may be experiencing this problem is that your services are not working. There are several cases in which to solve a problem, services are disabled. What's more, There are some PC optimization programs that disable their services to reduce CPU usage or “optimize” his computer. This solution works for most older versions of Windows (Pre Fall Creators Update).
PROFESSIONAL SUGGESTION: If the problem is with your computer or laptop / laptop, you should try to use Reimage Plus, which can scan repositories and replace damaged and lost files. This works in most cases when the problem originates due to system damage. You can download Reimage by clicking here
-
Press Windows + R, write »services. msc »in the dialog box and hit Enter.
-
Once in the service window, check your services and make sure they are not turned off.
-
One notable service you should check out is »Volume Shadow Copy«. This is the main process responsible for managing system images. Set the status to automatic and make sure it is enabled.
-
What's more, check if the process »Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider» is running. Navigate to its properties and set its startup state to automatic and make sure it is running.
-
In addition to these services, also make sure other services are up and running.
Solution 3: install new windows and mount the image later (Advanced users)
This solution is for advanced users who know what they are doing. Follow the step-by-step instructions and make the necessary changes according to your system.
Note: We are assuming file and directory paths here for your ease. Make sure to replace the drives when you are running the solution with the correct ones on your computer.
-
Disconnect your computer from the network. This is done to prevent Windows Update from running.
-
Insert the installation media and install Windows 10. When prompted, select the option »I don't have a product key«. What's more, select the option »Custom: install Windows only «. This will create all partitions on your disk (C: EFI Recovery) Y, through this, will have a Windows machine 10 to work.
-
Login to your account.
-
Press Windows + E to start File Explorer. Find local disk C, right click on the empty space and select New> Binder. Name the new folder »MountedVHDX«.
-
Create another new folder called »WindowsImage» on local drive C and copy the folder that matches the WindowsImage folder from your backups.
-
Now connect an external hard drive to your computer. Must have a decent empty space (at least as much as your SIB. Suppose the external disk is named »E:«.
-
Create a new folder on your hard drive called »CapturedWIM«.
-
Press Windows + S, scribe “PowerShell” in the dialog, right-click on the app and select “Execute as an administrator”. Now run the following commands:
Mount-WindowsImage -ImagePath fullpathofvhdxindoublequotes -Path c: MountedVHDX -Index 1
New-WindowsImage -CapturePath C: MountedVHDX -Name Win10Backup -ImagePath E: CapturedWIMsib.wim -Description “Windows 10 Backup” -Verify
Unmount-Window Image -Path C: MountedVHDX -Descargar
Note: Insert the full path of the VHDX in the first command in the list instead of “fullpathvhdxindoublequotes”.
-
Restart your Windows after running the above mentioned commands.
-
Now, once you are at the login screen, click the power button and click »Restart» again while holding down the Shift key. This will force your computer into recovery mode.
-
Select the following options:
Problem solving> Advanced> Symbol of the system
-
When the command line appears, run the following commands:
Format c:
Dism / Apply-Image /ImageFile:E:CapturedWIMsib.wim / Index: 1 / ApplyDir: C:
-
Now, when you restart your computer, the problem will be solved.
SUGGESTION: If none of the methods have solved your problem, we recommend that you use the Reimage repair tool, which can scan repositories to replace damaged and lost files. This works in most cases, when the problem originates due to a system corruption. Reimage will also optimize your system for maximum performance. You can download Reimage by clicking here
