There is nothing scarier than receiving an error before the computer completely turns on. In this specific circumstance, users have reported that they have received a LogonUI.exe – Application error on login screen. The severity of the error is such that the user cannot click anything on the login screen and the only option they have is to forcibly shut down the computer, rendering it useless.
LogonUI is a Windows program that takes care of the interface you see on the login screen. This error you are getting indicates that the Logonui.exe file itself has become corrupted or that another program is interfering and is causing LogonUI to produce such results.
Our guide below will cover both sides of the matter., at the same time other possible causes of this error.
Additionally KB3097877 has been reported to be causing this issue. For professionals, if they can connect remotely and perform commands supported on the command line, remove update KB3097877 remotely with the following command:
wusa /uninstall /kb:3097877 /quiet
Solution 1: Ejecute DISM Repair
This error can occur if the LogonUI program on your computer is faulty. To repair it we will have to log in in safe mode with the command prompt.
To do this, turn on your system and then turn off your computer when you get to the Windows logo. Repeat these steps from 4 a 5 times and in sometime you will get Preparing for automatic repair under the Windows logo. Let it run this time.
On the Automatic Repair screen, click on Advanced Options > Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Command Prompt.
The command window will open with a black window. In it he writes Dism / Online / Cleanup-Image / RestoreHealth and hit Enter.
Windows will repair any system files that it finds corrupt.
Once the procedure is complete, check if the problem has been solved. Opposite case, you may need to repair system files from installation media.
To do this, create an installation media following the Method 5 in our guide here and once you get to Advanced Options, select Safe Mode with Command Prompt.
Your computer will now start in safe mode with a command window.
First, you will need to confirm the disk letter of the installation media you inserted. To find it, in the black window type D: and hit Enter. If you see folders like boot, efi, sources in the list that appears, so this is the installation media.
If that is not the case, pressure E: and press Enter and check the folder names. Keep checking the drive letters and make a note of the drive letter in which those folders appear. In this guide, we will assume it is drive letter E :.
Now type Dism / Image: C: / Cleanup-Image / RestoreHealth / Source:wim:D:SourcesNInstall.wim:1 / limitccess and hit Enter.
Once the procedure is complete, restart your computer. The problem should go away now. If that is not the case, go to next solution.
Solution 2: uninstall FastAccess or other similar security programs
If you have installed facial accreditation software programs such as FastAccess, its incompatibility with Windows 10 can cause this problem.
To do this, turn on the system and then forcibly turn off the computer when you get to the Windows logo. Repeat these steps from 4 a 5 times and in sometime you will get Preparing for automatic repair under the Windows logo. Let it run this time.
On the Automatic Repair screen, click on Advanced Options > Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Startup Settings
Click Restart.
After reboot when you get to the startup settings screen, press F4 for safe mode.
Once you log in, press and hold the Windows key and press R. Type appwiz.cpl and hit Enter. Look for FastAccess or any similar security program. Right click and click Uninstall.
If the LogonUI error also appears in Safe Mode, disabling your connection, access the command line following the instructions in the Solution 1.
In the command prompt window, write ren “C: Program files” “Old program files” and hit Enter.
Now type ren “C: Program files (x86)” “Program files (x86) -old” and hit Enter. Do not worry, inclusive gives an error. Proceed anyway.
Now restart your computer and log in regularly.
Open your C drive and delete -old from the folder named Program Files and Program Files (x86).
Now, press and hold the Windows key and press R. Type appwiz.cpl and hit Enter. Look for FastAccess or any other security program that looks suspicious. Right click and click Uninstall.
Now reboot your system and check.
Solution 3: disable the graphics card adapter
Additionally, a temporary roadblock with your graphics adapter can cause the LogonUI program to react like this.. To remedy this, we will disable the graphics adapter in safe mode, later we will update and enable it in normal mode.
Get into safe mode by following our guide here.
Once you log in to safe mode, press and hold the Windows key and press R. Type devmgmt.msc and hit Enter.
In the Device Manager window, expand Display adapters and right-click the device below. Click Deactivate.
Restart your system and you should be able to connect regularly.
Now similarly enable the device via Device Manager.
Click the device and click to update the driver software.
In the Windows update window, click Search automatically for updated driver software.
It will automatically search for and install updated drivers, if they are available. Also check your graphics card manufacturer's web portal for the latest drivers for Windows. 10.
