If you just bought a new laptop or desktop, all your USB ports are likely USB 3.0. USB 3.0 it is much more reliable, much faster and the whole world is gradually adopting it as the new technological standard.

But if all your USB ports are 3.0, you risk major compatibility issues when it comes to older devices that only know how to use USB 2.0. Method 1: Manual installation of the printer driver

Windows 10 it is extremely good at finding drivers for devices that connect automatically. But I wouldn't trust this feature too much if you're connecting an old printer. In case the computer detects the printer but does not work properly, you need to start looking for some drivers first.

If you search online, make sure you stay within the official download sites and repositories. You are unlikely to find a Windows driver 10 for your old printer, but you can settle for a Windows compatible driver 8. should work fine.

Method 2: connect the printer to the charging port

If you couldn't fix the bridge between your old printer and a USB port 3.0, let's use a different approach. Even if your laptop / desktop computer only has USB ports 3.0, one of them must be a loading port. As usual, it is easy to locate as it has a loading icon next to it.

It's a long shot, but some users have hinted that the charging port allowed them to start printing again from a USB stick 2.0. I'm not sure about the technicalities behind this., but I guess it has something to do with the charging port being able to provide more power than the standard ones. Anyway, It's worth a try.

Method 3: disable and re-enable USB controllers

If the first two methods have not been successful, Let's try uninstalling and reinstalling the native USB drivers. You may be dealing with corruption within USB controllers. Don't be afraid of this procedure, it's completely harmless. Windows will automatically check for hardware changes and automatically reinstall the correct drivers. This is what you should do:

  1. Press the Windows key + R to open a run command. Type »devmgmt.msc» and press Enter to open Device Manager.

  2. Once you are in Device Manager, scroll down to Universal Serial Bus Controllers and expand the entry.

  3. Right-click the first USB driver and click Uninstall to remove it.

  4. Repeat the procedure for each USB controller that is listed in Serial Bus Controllers. Once you have uninstalled them all, restart your pc.

  5. When restarting, Windows will automatically search for hardware changes and install the missing drivers. Once completed, reconnect the printer and see if it can print.

Method 4: use a car repair printing tool (solo HP)

I'm not sure all printer manufacturers have a tool like this, but HP has a software called Print and Scan Doctor that is able to diagnose and solve compatibility problems like this. All you have to do is download the tool from the official HP website and run the executable.

Print and Scan Doctor will automatically detect USB connection problems and apply a series of automatic fixes. If you don't have an HP printer, search online for an equivalent tool for your manufacturer.

Method 5: using Windows USB troubleshooter

If nothing has worked so far, Let's try a tool developed by Microsoft. Microsoft has a super powerful web-based auto diagnostic and repair application. The problem is that it is not included in any version of Windows. To use the Windows USB troubleshooter, download the tool from this official link.

After downloading it, just open the tool and follow the instructions on the screen. If you find any inconsistencies, Windows USB troubleshooter will automatically apply the necessary fixes.

Method 6: Enabling Legacy USB Support for USB Controllers

If you don't have the printer yet, go to BIOS settings / UEFI and check if USB Legacy support is enabled for your USB controllers. You can find it with similar wording or in two separate categories for standard and USB drivers 3.0. In my ASUS BIOS, USB Legacy support can be found in the Advanced tab.

Method 7: prevent Windows from turning off the device

If the printer connects only for a moment before disappearing from your Windows PC, a Windows glitch can automatically shut down the device to save power. This is known to occur with various laptop power saving plans. This is what needs to be done:

  1. Press the Windows key + R to open the Run command. Type »devmgmt.msc» and press Enter to open Device Manager.

  2. Scroll down to USB Serial Device Drivers and find the USB root hub entries.

  3. Right click on a USB root hub and go to Properties> Power Management Tab. Here, uncheck the box next to Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power. Press Ok to save your selection.

  4. Restart your computer and reconnect your printer.

Method 8: using a USB hub 2.0 or a USB expansion card 2.0

If none of the above has helped, your only option is to buy hardware. But I'm not talking about a new printer, it would be too expensive. The cheapest solution would be to buy a USB hub 2.0 and connect it to a USB port 3.0. This will eliminate any compatibility issues you may have.

If you have a desktop computer, you can also opt for a PCIe USB expansion card 2.0. They are usually even cheaper than a USB hub 2.0.
