Multiple users see the error Your request could not be completed because the smart object is not a directly editable error when trying to cut or delete a selected part of an image in Photoshop. This particular bug is reported to occur in CS3, CS4, CS5, CS6 and all CC versions of Photoshop.

What is causing the smart object to not be a bug in a direct editable way?

We investigated this particular topic by examining various user reports. We were also able to replicate the error on one of our test machines.. From what we have collected, there are a couple of scenarios that will lead to this error message:

• The layer of the image involved in the selection is locked: the most common reason this problem occurs is when the selected image layer is locked or partially locked. Follow the method 1 for steps to unlock the selected image layer.

• The layer involved contains vector data: This problem can also occur if you try to delete a selection that contains vector data. Layer rasterization should fix the problem in this circumstance.

If you have difficulty solving this particular problem, this post will provide you with a couple of repair strategies. Here are a couple of solutions that many users encountering the same problem have used to avoid the error message “Your request could not be completed because the smart object cannot be edited directly”.

Method 1: unlock image layer

As reported by a couple of users, for them, the answer was as simple as opening the image that was causing the error in Photoshop and unlocking the image layer.

This will allow you to delete, cut or modify image selection without getting error. Could not complete your request because the smart object is not directly editable.

Here is a quick guide on how to do this:

1. Open Photoshop and upload the image showing the error message.

2. Before making the selection, go to the Layers tab using the menu on the right and click the Lock icon to unlock the partially locked layer. Unlocking the partially locked layer

3. With the cloak unlocked, select the area you want to cut, copy and delete and see if the error persists.

If you keep seeing the same error, go to Method 2.

Method 2: solve vector conflict

Another common approach that will throw this error is if you try to use raster-supported tools on a shape layer. There are two alternatives to solve the conflict of this king:

• Use the vector tools to edit or delete all vector items (pencil tool, direct selection tool, etc.)

• The layer is rasterized to be able to use raster-supported tools.

Since rasterization is much easier and can be applied to most scenarios, we will focus on that. Here is a quick guide on how to rasterize the layer that is causing you problems:

1. Open the Photoshop file in which you encounter the problem.

2. Right-click the layer displaying the error message and choose Rasterize Layer. Rasterize the smart object layer

   Note: Additionally you can use the Simplify Layer function to convert the smart object to a normal raster layer.

3. Once the smart object has been rasterized, remove, cut or repeat the same procedure that triggered the problem. You should have no problem completing it.
