Error 0xc0000022 is often associated with legacy applications that have compatibility issues with the latest versions of Windows (Windows 10 and Windows 8.1). But you may also encounter this error message when running Adobe Acrobat Reader, open a PDF file or run another Adobe product. Some antivirus suites are known to cause this problem by blocking the permissions required by the application displaying the error.

For those applications written in Visual Basic, error 0xc0000022 usually indicates a permissions problem with a DLL file (dynamically linked library) required. Often, this problem can be avoided by running the program with administrative privileges. This can be easily done by right-clicking the application shortcut and clicking Run as administrator.

If running the program with administrative rights didn't help, turn your attention to your antivirus. Some third-party antivirus suites are known to (especially AVG and Mc Afee) cause this error with browsers and other apps that require network permissions. Try to disable the real-time protection function of the third-party antivirus and reopen the application.

If that didn't work, use one of the two methods below to get rid of error 0xc0000022. In case you see the error message when opening Adobe Reader or a PDF file, follow the method 1. If you see the error after running an application (or play) legacy on Windows 8 o Windows 10, follow the method 2.

Method 1: repair Microsoft Visual C ++ 2013 Redistributable

Most applications still rely on Microsoft Visual C redistributable packages ++ to work properly on Windows, and Acrobat Reader is no exception. Some users reported seeing error 0xc0000022 with an Adobe product after Windows performed an automatic update. Fortunately, this can be solved by repairing the Microsoft Visual C redistributable packages ++ 2013 used by the Adobe suite. Follow the guide below to get rid of error 0xc0000022:

Note: The following guide will also work with other Adobe products displaying error 0xc0000022, not only with Acrobat Reader.

Press the Windows key + R to open a run window. Type appwiz.cpl and hit Enter to open Programs and Features.
Scroll down to Microsoft Visual C Redistributable Packages ++ 2013 and right click on the first entry. Then click Change.
Click the Repair button and then Yes when the User Account Control pop-up is displayed.
Once the configuration is successful, repeat step 2 and El Paso 3 for all remaining Microsoft Visual C packages ++ 2013.
Once all Microsoft Visual C packages have been repaired ++ 2013, restart your machine and try restarting Acrobat Reader (or open a PDF file).

If the application still displays the same error message, Go back to Program and Features and uninstall all Microsoft Visual C packages ++ 2013. Later, perform another reboot and use this official Microsoft link to download and install the packages again.

Method 2: enable DirectPlay on legacy components

DirectPlay is an outdated API that was previously part of Microsoft's DirectX API. It is essentially a network communication library that is used primarily for computer game development., but it was also used in some general purpose applications.

You may have encountered error 0xc0000022 when trying to open an old game or application. This happens because the game (or the app) in question tries to use a .dll file that was deprecated along with DirectPlay. Although DirectPlay components are considered obsolete in Windows 8.1 and Windows 10, can still be activated from Windows settings.

Windows is used 8.1 o Windows 10, DirectPlay will be disabled by default. Follow the guide below to activate DirectPlay and eliminate error 0xc0000022:

Press the Windows key + R to open a run window. In the, type appwiz.cpl and press Enter to open Programs and Features.
Click Turn Windows Features On or Off.
Please wait until the list is filled, then check the box next to Legacy Components.
Press the icon + next to Legacy Components and check the box next to DirectPlay. Press Ok to save the settings.
Your operating system will configure the files necessary to activate DirectPlay. Do not close the window until you see the message »Windows completed the requested changes».
Restart your system and run the application again. It should open without the 0xc0000022 error.
