▷ What is remsh.exe and should I remove it?

Some users debate whether remsh.exe is a malicious executable or a legitimate Windows component. Most of the time, users end up investigating the process after noticing that it is constantly using system resources, writing and reading things on the windows partition or trying to access the internet.

But maybe even more annoying, many users report that the remsh.exe process is responsible for certain systems waking up from hibernation or sleep.

What is remsh.exe?

Even the official Microsoft documentation mentions that the remsh.exe file is susceptible to being used in a phishing scheme if it is not installed with the KB4023057 update.. Therefore, it is important to perform the necessary checks to determine if the remsh.exe file is legitimate or not.

The quickest way to determine if the file is legitimate is to check if it is signed by Microsoft. To do this, presione Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. Then, in the Processes tab, look for the remsh.exe process, right click on it and choose Properties.

On the Properties screen of remsh.exe, go to the Digital Signatures tab and see if the Signer Name corresponds to Microsoft Windows. If so, you may consider the file to be safe.

In the event that the remsh.exe file is not signed by Microsoft, further investigation is required. How to disable remsh.exe?

Here are two different methods you can use to disable remsh.exe from your Windows computer 10.

Method 1: disable remsh.exe through Autoruns

Autoruns is a free program that allows users to delete startup keys, run keys, one-time keys and registry keys. It is especially useful in this case, since we can use it to prevent remsh.exe from being called and started at every system startup.

Here is a quick guide on using Autoruns to disable remsh.exe:

1. Visit this official download link (here) and click Download Autoruns and Autorunsc to download a utility file.

   

2. Once the file has downloaded to your computer, use unzipping software like WinZip, WinRar or 7-zip to extract the contents of the archive to an accessible folder.

3. Navigate to the folder containing the Autoruns files and double click on Autoruns.exe.

4. Wait until the Everything Autorun list is completely full. Once the list is full, presione Ctrl + F to display the search function.

5. In the search box, type remsh.exe and click Find Next.

   

6. Right-click on the highlighted entry and click Delete to delete the startup key associated with remsh.exe.

7. Repeat steps 5 Y 6 until i mention remsh.exe.

8. Close Autoruns and restart your computer.

In the next start, open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) and see if you still find the remsh.exe process running. If it is still active, continue with method 2 to remove it along with the update that installed it in the first place.

Method 2: uninstall Windows update KB4023057

Another way to avoid remsh.exe removal is to uninstall Windows update (KB4023057) which installed remsh.exe. Users in a similar situation have reported that uninstalling update KB4023057 also removed remsh.exe and, in consecuense, prevented the process from randomly waking your system from sleep or hibernation.

Here is a quick guide on how to uninstall KB4023057 update from Windows:

1. Open a new Run box by pressing the Wndows key + R. Then type »ms-settings: windowsupdate »and hit Enter to open the Windows Update screen.

   

2. On the Windows Update screen, click View update history.

   

3. On the View update history screen, click Uninstall updates.

4. Scroll through the list of installed Windows updates to locate update KB4023057.

5. Right click on KB4023057 and select Uninstall, then follow the onscreen instructions to remove it from your system.

6. Restart your computer. You should notice that the remsh.exe process is no longer present in Task Manager.
