Microsoft had bad luck with its Internet Explorer in the past and it is still available on Windows 10. Microsoft stepped up and started working to develop a competitor for other famous browsers. Therefore, introduced Microsoft Edge, which is definitely an improved version of IE, but it is still far behind market giants like Chrome, Firefox, etc. Therefore, people are not satisfied with this version, since there are many errors that cause Edge to lose audience.
Then, people wonder how to disable or remove Microsoft Edge within their Windows 10. Actually, there is no conventional way to erase Microsoft Edge, but you can disable it by opening web pages automatically. Microsoft Edge is an integral part of Windows 10 and it can't be erased like IE, which cannot be removed in a conventional way either.
Before proceeding to disable Edge, we must make a clear differentiation of what we understand by setting another browser as default. Microsoft Edge is an integral part of the operating system and, although there are alternative solutions available, not guaranteed to work, as Microsoft tries to fix these loopholes in every update. Setting another browser as the default does not necessarily mean that Microsoft Edge is completely uninstalled. It simply means that your web pages will open in another browser instead of Edge.
So here is the guide to disable Microsoft Edge and restrict it from opening websites automatically.
Solution 1: How to disable border using file renaming
One solution that worked for many users was renaming the Microsoft Edge core file. Every time Edge needs to run, you must access your installation files to start the corresponding startup instructions. Once they are obtained, starts. How hard is it to delete the entire folder, since Microsoft Edge is an important part of the operating system, we can try to change the directory name. Please note that you need an administrator account to perform this operation.
-
Press Windows + I to start File Explorer. Press »This PC» present in the left navigation panel and navigate to the following file path:
C:NWindowsN-SystemApps
-
Once in the directory, find the following folder »MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe«.
-
Right click on the folder and select Properties.
-
Once in the properties, follow this tutorial to take ownership of the folder.
-
Once you have the property, right-click on the folder again and select »Rename«. Please note that you need an administrative account to perform this operation.
-
Rename the folder to »MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe_OLD«. You can change the name to anything, but be sure to add the text after the original folder name in case you want to reactivate Edge.
-
Restart your computer and see if Edge is still enabled.
Solution 2: change default browser
The only convenient and recommended way to disable Microsoft Edge is to change the default browser within Settings. As i mentioned before, there is no easy way to permanently erase or disable Edge. Therefore, You can follow these steps to prevent Edge browser from opening web content.
1. 1. Go to Settings by clicking the Start menu icon and selecting Settings from the list.
2. Inside the settings, click on System and select the Default applications option in the left panel located in the penultimate position of the list.
3. In the right panel, select Internet Explorer (set as default browser) and click on it. If you had some other browser installed on your PC, would appear on the list. Just select and another default browser from the list. As in my case, I have selected Firefox as my default browser. What's more, it would be better if you unlocked Edge browser from taskbar and start menu.
Solution 3: remove Microsoft Border using registry
This method above technically changes the default browsers to avoid border interference. However, if you want to completely remove Edge (that we do not recommend), the reason why Edge is a reliable UI app and a critical part of Windows 10. Therefore; cannot be removed with traditional methods. And since you have changed your default browsers, will not interfere in any way; but if you still want to continue, continue with the steps below.
Open command prompt as administrator and type powershell followed by enter to change cmd to PS. Once this is done, scribe
Get-AppxPackage
This should list all installed apps and main Windows features 10. Scroll down and find the one with Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge, copy it (you can use mouse to highlight full name then press Ctrl + C to copy it) or type PackageFullName, which will change depending on the Windows build 10 what you want are using. For the RTM version released in July, namely:
Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_20.10240.16384.0_neutral__8wekyb3d8bbwe | Remove-AppxPackage
O
Get-AppxPackage *edge* | Remove-AppxPackage
This should remove the application. Alternatively, you can navigate to the Windows Apps installation location:
C:|WindowsN-SystemAppsN
And right click on Microsoft Edge folder, Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe, and select Properties, where you can set the folder and all its content to Read Only (make sure the checkbox shows a check mark, not a square). This will prevent Windows from making changes to the folder.
Later, you can open the folder and rename the Microsoft Edge executables (MicrosoftEdge.exe y MicrosoftEdgeCP.exe) Y / or delete them.
Solution 4: disable launch edge on reboot
We will use Registry Editor to prevent Edge from starting when you start your computer. Please note that the registry editor is a powerful tool and changing keys that you are not aware of can lead to discrepancies in your operating system.
-
Press Windows + R to start the application Run. Type »regedit» in the dialog box and press Enter.
-
Once in the registry editor, navigate to the following file path:
Computer HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE_SYSTEMN-Current Control Services {NlaSvc}Internet parameters
-
Now, look at the right side of the screen where the different keys are listed. Search them until you find »EnableActiveProbing«. Double click on it to open its properties.
-
Set the current value to zero »0«. Press Ok to save changes and exit.
-
Now restart your computer properly and check if Edge still shows up when restarting.
Change Cortana's default browser
Windows 10 has a virtual assistant named Cortana. It is very useful and helps you organize and carry out your daily tasks efficiently. However, like all other Microsoft products, Cortana also uses Microsoft Edge as the default browser to perform its tasks, but you can make it use Chrome instead of Microsoft Edge.
