Did you upgrade to Windows 10 and suddenly all or most of your icons disappeared? This is not an isolated problem; There have been numerous reports on the same problem. After upgrade, user can be left with two or three icons on the desktop and all the others just disappear. If this has happened to you, the first thing you should do is relax: you have not lost any data; your important files and folders are simply invisible. Clicking on an icon, you can also see the whole desktop is highlighted. What's more, the space between the visible icons is just one huge line at a time. This is not a permanent bug, can be easily fixed.
Before doing something, you must do a routine check-up first. Sometimes, icon desktop space error may be caused by switching to and from tablet mode. So make sure your computer's tablet mode is off. To do this, in the start menu, click Settings. Now click on System. In the window that appears, choose Tablet mode in the left panel. A table mode submenu will appear. The option to enable or disable tablet mode is available in the form of a toggle button. Below the phrase “Make Windows easier to touch when using your device as a tablet”, press the toggle button to turn it off. Tablet mode is now disabled. Can you see any immediate changes on your desktop? If that is not the case, follow the steps below to solve the problem.
Using Registry Editor for Icon Space Adjustment
In Windows 8 Y 10, option to set desktop icon spacing is no longer available via desktop as before. By default, icon spacing in Windows 10 should be set to -1125. However, when you face the above problem, can find an incongruous digit that runs into the tens of thousands, for example, 38275. The secret is to set this value back to the default value or at least its preferred value.
Press the Windows combination + R on your keyboard. The run dialog box appears.
Type regedit in the text area and click OK.
The registry editor will appear. If the UAC asks you, click yes.
Now navigate to the main HKEY_CURRENT_USER folder and click on it.
The folder opens in subtrees. Show each of the subtrees as shown below:
N – Control panel N – WindowMetrics desktop
Now you need to adjust the desktop icon space horizontally. Inside the panel to the right of WindowMetrics, double click IconSpacing to change it. It is important that while these values are modified, valid extension is kept. Enter a preferred value between -480 Y -2730 and then click or tap OK. If you want to have the default values, should only have the horizontal spacing in -1125. -480 Y -2730 it's just the extremes.
Now we have to also address the vertical spacing. Still on the right side of WindowMetrics, double click IconVerticalSpacing. Again, enter a preferred value between -480 Y -2730 (where -480 is the minimum while -2730 is the maximum at the opposite end). You can also choose the default value of -1128.
Now close the registry editor. Log out and log back in to Windows for the settings to take effect. You can also restart Windows Explorer. Just open the task manager and navigate to the Windows Explorer entry. Select it and click restart; or just right click and choose reboot from the menu. You can redo this tutorial as many times as you want until you reach perfection.
You have correctly adjusted the spacing of the desktop icons.
Adjust icon spacing with the mouse
Most computer mice have the roller or wheel between the left and right buttons.. That's what it takes to adjust the space between the desktop icons. This is, with much, the easiest method, but now there is a way to know the vertical and horizontal spacing values. Just see the changed settings and measure whether they are suitable or not. The main disadvantage of this method is that once the desktop spacing has been adjusted this way, cannot automatically revert to default settings. Anyway, if you don't feel like rummaging through the system registry, should definitely give it a try.
Close all active windows on your PC.
To activate the desktop, left click on a blank space on the desktop (be sure not to select or click any icon).
Now press the CTRL key on your keyboard. Without letting go, scroll up or down with the roller / mouse wheel. With every move to either side, you will see the desktop icons change in size, as well as its horizontal and vertical spacing. Scrolling up expands desktop icon space, while scrolling down reduces them. Once you see the settings you prefer, release the CTRL key.
Clever, space has been adjusted.
