Skype: an application that started as a simple instant messaging and VoIP client has now evolved into something much more, a staple for almost all people's phones and computers and the medium of communication used by most of the business world. Unfortunately, many people who use windows 8 and Windows 10 have reported that they cannot start Skype, and many of the users who can start the program successfully cannot log in with their Skype credentials.
Not being able to use an application that has become extremely common around the world (and for good reason besides) it can be quite an important matter. Fortunately, despite this, it is not an irreparable obstacle. The following are some of the most effective solutions for any Windows user 8/10 unable to login or log into Skype you can use to try to fix the problem on your own.
Some background on this topic, which is more common in Windows 8 and later versions, are due to built-in applications, where users try to run Skype from the installed application; note that there is a difference between an app and the desktop version.
Before continuing with any of these steps, try downloading and installing the desktop version of Skype from here. This should work, but if you already have the desktop version and it won't open, continue with the next steps.
If you don't know if it is a desktop version or a Windows application-based version, take a look at the picture below showing the difference.
Solution 1: run an SFC scan
Damaged system files can be the reason why Windows users 8/10 can't start or sign in to Skype. If a system file that has to do with Skype or that is necessary for Skype to function properly gets corrupted or damaged, Skype will stop working as it is supposed to and issues like the app won't start or can't log in. Fortunately, all versions of Windows operating system are equipped with SFC scan utility, a utility specifically designed to search Windows computers for damaged or corrupted system files and repair those it finds or replace them with cached versions.
If you can't sign in or sign in to Skype, running an SFC scan is a good starting point to try to erase the problem. If you don't know how to run an SFC scan, you can simply use this guide to run an SFC scan on a Windows computer 10.
Solution 2: try and sign in to Skype in safe mode
-
Press the Windows logo key + R to open a Run dialog, type msconfig. exe in the Run dialog box and press Enter to launch System Configuration.
-
Go to the Boot tab of System Settings.
-
Check the box next to Secure boot to enable the option and then also enable the Network option below it.
-
Click Apply and then OK, and click Restart in the resulting pop-up window to restart your computer in Safe Mode with Networking.
-
When the computer starts, will be in safe mode. Start Skype and check if it starts correctly or if you log in successfully.
-
If the problem persists, press the Windows logo key + R to open a Run dialog box one more time, type% appdata% in the Run dialog box and press Enter.
-
Look for the folder called Skype, right click on it, click Rename in the resulting context menu, rename the folder to Skype_2 and press Enter.
-
Close file explorer when starting Skype to see if the problem you were experiencing has been resolved or not.
-
Repeat steps 1 Y 2, disable Secure Boot option, click apply, click OK and click Restart in the resulting pop-up window to restart your computer in normal mode.
Solution 3: deshabilite uPnP
Skype has a feature known as uPnP that is enabled by default on all clients. Unfortunately, this feature can, in some cases, make the client unable to communicate properly with the Skype servers and log into Skype. Despite this, Fortunately, simply disabling uPnP in such cases is enough to get the job done and fix the problem. To disable uPnP, needs to:
-
Launch of Skype
-
Click on Tools.
-
Click Options ....
-
Click Advanced in the left panel.
-
Click Connection in the left pane.
-
In the right panel, locate the Enable uPnP option and uncheck the checkbox next to the option to disable uPnP.
-
Click Save.
-
Restart your computer.
-
When the computer boots, check whether the problem has been fixed or not.
Solution 4: uninstall and reinstall Skype
If none of the other solutions listed and described previously worked for you, don't fear, since you still have one last resort: uninstall Skype completely and reinstall it from scratch. Although it may seem extreme, uninstalling and reinstalling Skype is a safe way to fix most Skype-related problems. To uninstall and then reinstall Skype, should:
-
Press the Windows logo key + R to open a career
-
Ingrese appwiz. cpl in the Run dialog and hit Enter.
-
Find Skype among the list of programs and applications installed on your computer, right click and click Uninstall.
-
Follow the uninstall wizard to the end.
-
Once Skype has been successfully uninstalled, restart your computer.
-
When the computer starts, launch the Windows Store and find and download the latest version of the Skype application that is compatible with your version of Windows operating system.
-
Once Skype has been reinstalled, Launch it to see if your problem has been solved or not.
If the problem persists even after uninstalling Skype and reinstalling it from scratch, just repeat the Solution 2 on your newly installed Skype instance and see if that helps fix the problem.
