▷ Arrangement: Skyrim Crash to Desktop

Skyrim came out a long time ago, but the game still has a large player base due to its large size and the number of different side missions. However, users who installed too many mods or just regular users come across this strange bug when playing Skyrim regularly.

Skyrim sometimes just doesn't work right and the game crashes on the desktop on its own without producing an error code of any kind indicating the solution. The solutions to this problem vary in complexity and are also quite different from each other.. However, we recommend that you try each of them before one works for you.

Solution 1: use manual save

While playing Skyrim, the game is usually automatically saved during your progress every two minutes, which prevents you from losing your progress frequently. What's more, there is an option to save the game without too much trouble. However, you should try to switch to a manual save that you have created for your character and delete the rest, as the error may occur due to faulty quick save or autosave.

Open the game you are using and start playing. Press the Esc button to open the pause menu. Choose the Save tab.

Save your progress in the new slot you need to create and make sure to use this save file all the time.
Learn to always use the manual save option and not the automatic save option to load your games, as this functionality is known to become buggy after different modifications are involved.
Navigate to the following folder where the default saved files are located:

< C: N-Users[Username]N-Documents from my games N-Skyrim N-Save

Delete saved files that you are not using, especially auto saves or quick saves.

Note: If you can't see some of the folders we mentioned below, you will need to enable the option Show hidden files and folders inside the folder.

Click on the tab “Watch” in the File Explorer menu and click the box “Hidden elements” in the Show section / Hide. File Explorer will show hidden files and remember this option until you change it again.

Solution 2: reinstall the game

Reinstalling Skyrim on a PC can be easy and it can also be one of the easiest options in which you can resolve the desktop crash error. Reinstalling the game should reset the settings that went wrong and caused the error to start to appear, so you better check this solution.

Uninstall the game:

First, make sure you are logged in with an administrator account, as you will not be able to remove programs with any other account.
Make a backup of the saved files from the location in the Solution 1 copying them to another folder because uninstalling Skyrim will remove them.

Click on the start menu and open the control panel by searching for it. Alternatively, you can click gear icon to open settings if you are using windows 10.
In the control panel, select »View as: Category »in the upper right corner and click Uninstall a program in the Programs section.

If you use the Settings app, by clicking Applications, a list of all programs installed on your PC will immediately open.
Find Skyrim in your control panel or settings and click Uninstall.
The Skyrim uninstall wizard should open or, if you bought the game with Steam, your client should open up and ask you to choose.

A message will appear asking: »Do you want to completely remove Skyrim from Windows?»Choose Yes.
Click Finish when the uninstall process is complete.

To reinstall Skyrim, you will need to insert the disc you bought with Skyrim and follow the instructions on the screen, or you will need to download it again from Steam. The game will remain in your library, so right click on it and choose Install option. Check if the game keeps crashing.

Solution 3: adjust shadow settings

Most of the users claim that the random crash on the desktop while playing Skyrim can be attributed to the shadow settings. It doesn't matter how good your PC is, this problem may affect you and you can try to fix it using the simplest settings of all: lower the quality of shadows or turn them off completely.

Click on the Skyrim icon on your desktop or somewhere you have it installed to open Skyrim Launcher.

Click Options and then click Advanced option in Detail section.
In the details tab, you should be able to see the Shadow Detail option. Click the arrow button next to it and choose Low.

Open Skyrim and see if the error still appears.

Solution 4: turn off audio and video decoders ffdshow

Users suggested turning off these AV decoders if you have them installed on your computer, which can be easily done by setting these programs as exceptions in the game. If you cannot locate these programs on your computer, means you don't have them installed and you can just skip this solution.

Click the Start menu or the search button next to it and type ffdshow in the search bar.

Click on the audio or video decoder (you will have to repeat the same process for both) and wait for them to open.
You will see a menu on the right that consists of several options. Navigate to the DirectShow control section.
Check the box next to »Do not use ffdshow in:»And click Edit.

Find Skyrim.exe in the list that will open or click the Add button and find the Skyrim executable file on your computer.
Repeat the process for the other decoder you haven't opened and see if the error reappears.

Solution 5: Check the integrity of the game cache

Verifying the integrity of the game cache is an option available only to Steam users who have downloaded the game from there. This is a good solution as this option will search your Skyrim files for a broken one and will also automatically download any lost or damaged files. Follow the steps below to get it.

Open your Steam client and navigate to the Library tab. Steam Library
Right click on the game that is causing these problems and select Properties.
Go to the Local Files tab and click on the Verify the integrity of the game cache option …
Try running the game and see if the problem persists.

Solution 6: adjust Windows sound settings

Changing the sound settings in your PC's Control Panel is an official Bethesda solution that seems to have helped a lot of people deal with random desktop crashes. However, this will change the sound settings on your PC, but the change will probably go unnoticed and the error will be gone forever. Sound issues in Skyrim are a known issue.

Right click on the volume icon at the bottom right of your desktop screen (system tray) and choose the option Playback devices.
On the Playback tab of the Sound window (that just opened), select your default playback device (Speakers).

Right click on the device and choose Properties option. When the Properties window opens, navigate to the Advanced tab.
In the Default Format section, click the arrow button next to quality mode and choose this option:

Then click OK to apply the changes and open Skyrim to see if the crashes continue to occur.

Solution 7: use these .ini files

The .ini extension is used for Skyrim preferences files, which can be found in the folder where you installed the game and contains all the settings that can be changed in Skyrim. You should always be careful when dealing with these types of files, as changing or removing them incorrectly can have serious consequences.

NOTE: This solution will only work for 32 operating systems, so check it only if your Windows is 32 bits.

Go to the Files tab and click on INI Skyrim Files >> Manual download.

The download should start immediately, so click on the .zip file after downloading and extract the files somewhere in a folder located on your desktop, call “Skyrim INI”.
Navigate to the folder below, right click on the file named SkyrimPrefs.ini and click copy. Paste the file in a different folder called “Skyrim Backup” in his desk.

Open the »Skyrim INI» folder on your desktop where the downloaded files should be located and copy the SkyrimPrefs.ini file into the folder above.
Navigate to the folder below, right click on the file named Skyrim.ini and click copy. Paste the file in the same folder “Skyrim Backup” in his desk.

From the Skyrim INI folder, locate the Skyrim.ini file and paste it into the folder above. In this way, We have applied the changes to the files that should lead to the error code disappearing from your PC but we have also made a backup of all your settings in case something goes wrong.

Solution 8: Disable the touch keyboard service

This was discovered by a user on Steam and he was able to handle the issue by disabling the service in question. Please note that this solution applies to Windows users 8 O 10. Most of the other users tried this method and the results are outstanding. Even though the method may seem obscure and you've never heard of this Touch Keyboard, try it and you will be surprised.

Open the Run dialog using the Windows key combination + R .

Scribe " services.msc " without the quotes in the Run dialog box and click OK.

Locate the Touch Keyboard and Handwriting Panel Service , right-click and select Properties . Open the Properties of the Touchpad and Handwriting Panel Service

Make sure that the option in the startup type in the Properties of the Touchpad Service and Handwriting Panel is set to Disabled .

If the service is running (you can check it right next to the service status message), you can stop it immediately by clicking the Stop button.

Note : You may receive the following error message when you click Start:

"Windows could not stop the touch keyboard and writing pad service on the local computer. Error 1079: The account specified for this service differs from the account specified for other services running in the same process".

If this happens, follow the instructions below to fix it.

Follow the steps 1-3 from the instructions above to open the touch keyboard and handwriting panel service properties .

Navigate to the Login tab and click the Browse button .

In the box " Enter the name of the object to select ", type the name of your computer and click Check Names and wait for the name to authenticate. Check Names of Your Computer

Click OK when done and type the administrator password in the Password box when prompted.

Click OK and close this window.

Go back to the touch keyboard and handwriting pad service properties and click Start.

Solution 9: Install the latest patch:

Skyrim Developers Release New Patches to Fix Existing or Known Game Issues. If the crash you are facing is the result of a known bug that is already patched in the latest version, then installing the latest patch will solve the problem. Make sure you have your credentials handy so you can log back in after the update.

Visit the official Skyrim development page to check for the latest version of the patch. If so, then download and install the latest patch. Latest patch update

Now launch Skyrim to check if it works correctly.

Solution 10: Update graphics drivers:

Graphics drivers are the driving force behind your graphics cards. If you use an outdated version of the drivers, then it may cause the fall of Skyrim. Then, updating the latest version of the drivers may solve the problem. There are two ways to update the drivers: update them automatically using Windows Update or update them manually after downloading the drivers from the manufacturer's website.

Update to the latest version of the driver.

Restart your system and launch Skyrim.
