▷ How to improve download speed on your PS4

Contents

When it comes to choosing a side in the console war, I have always supported Sony. But I can't help but admit that slow downloads have plagued PlayStation for as long as I can remember..

Games have gotten a lot bigger in the last two years. It is now common for triple A games to take up more than 40 GB of space. This is not a big problem if you play your games from physical discs. But if you buy your games digitally, sit back and wait. Regardless of your internet service provider, it will most likely take forever to download the new game you just bought on PSN. Fortunately, There are ways to improve the download speed of your PS4. Some of the solutions will temporarily increase the download speed, while others offer permanent improvement.

Without any more preambles, Below is a collection of methods that helped many users improve download speeds on their PS4. Please note that not all fixes will work for you. I suggest you go through each method in order until you find a solution that really helps you.

Method 1: update the latest firmware

Can't blame Sony for not trying to solve the download speed issue. In the last two years, I have seen at least 4 board patches claiming to have fixed this issue. Even if it doesn't give you a drastic increase in speed, could still make a difference.

A quick way to check if your PS4 console is running the latest firmware is to connect it to the internet and open the notification bar. If you are not prompted to update immediately, scroll down until you see an entry with system software.

Method 2: use a wired Ethernet connection

While the PS4 Pro has a more powerful Wi-Fi receiver, phat and slim versions do not have the same capabilities. But even on the PS4 Pro, the download speed on Wi-Fi will be considerably lower than on an Ethernet connection.

If you want a higher download speed, it is essential that you connect your PS4 to the Internet with a cable. Note that the ends of the Ethernet cable are interchangeable, so it doesn't matter which side you connect to the router.

Method 3: make sure your modem has enough bandwidth

Your PS4 download speed may also be limited by your modem bandwidth (router). This is even more likely if you are working with an older or cheaper modem or router.

Although your ISP guarantees a certain amount of megabytes per second, does not necessarily mean that your modem can handle them all. Before continuing with the solutions below, make sure your modem is powerful enough to support the download speeds guaranteed by your internet service provider. You can do this by checking your bandwidth and making sure you are getting enough according to your plan..

Another thing you need to do is make sure your network is not too crowded. Please note that the download speed of your PS4 can be seriously affected if you have other devices connected to that internet network.

Method 3: pause and resume a single download

The following solution is temporary. But it has served me many times, so i decided to present it. This is the equivalent of restarting your PS4, but it's infinitely faster.

Important! – Downloading various games / updates will result in slower speeds. If you want the best possible speed, download each file separately.

In the event that your shocks start at full force but speed gradually decrease, follow these steps:

  1. On the PS4 dashboard, navigate to the Downloads tab.

  2. Select the game you are downloading and tap the X button.

  3. Select Pause from the drop-down menu.

  4. With the download paused, wait for 5 a 10 seconds.

  5. Select Resume and see how your download speed improves.

Method 4: change DNS and MTU settings

This is a permanent solution that I can confirm is efficient. By default, your PS4 will automatically set DNS and MTU when you connect to the internet through easy mode. But it can actually improve the download speed if you have additional problems. This is what you have to do:

  1. On the dashboard of your PS4, navigate to Settings (briefcase icon).

  2. From there, go to Network and select Configure your Internet connection. Now it all depends on the type of connection you want to create. If you want to connect by cable, select Use LAN cable; otherwise, choose Use Wi-Fi.

use-wi-fi-1083368Note: To get the best download speed, it is strongly recommended to create a LAN cable connection.

  3. Make sure to select the custom network creation mode. Otherwise, the method will not be possible.

  4. In the IP address settings, select Automatic.

    automatic-3-5907604

  5. Now, in DHCP hostname, be sure to select Don't specify.

    dhcp-host-6309867

  6. In DNS Settings, select Manual.

  7. Now you will be asked to insert the primary and secondary DNS. There are two possible DNS numbers you can insert:

     DNS the Google:
    Primary DNS - 8.8.8.8
    Secondary DNS - 8.8.4.4 OpenDNS:
    Primary DNS - 208.67.222.22
    Secondary DNS - 208.67.220.220

dns-9601412Both Google DNS and Open DNS work fine. You can try both and see which one reaches a higher speed. Once you have decided on a DNS, write it down and click Next.

  8. In MTU Settings, select Manual.

    manual-3-5234616

  9. In the MTU menu, enter 1473. If that doesn't work on your console, try 1450. Hit Next once you're done.

    man-4510819

  10. Once it reaches the proxy server, select Do not use.

  11. Once you are done, measure your internet connection by selecting Internet Connection Test. If you don't see an improvement, don't be discouraged. Try downloading a game and see how it works.

Method 5: use a proxy to improve download speed

I know it may seem strange to use a proxy to improve download speed, but there is actually a plausible explanation behind it. By default, the PS4 doesn't get a lot of data at once. But if we pipe the data through a proxy, we will force the console to collect small amounts of data faster.

Now, before continuing, you will need a computer ready. What's more, both your computer and your PS4 must be connected to the same network. Without further explanation, this is what to do:

  1. Download and install CCProxy on your computer. It's completely free. If you are on mac, download and install Squidman.

  2. Open the proxy software and press Start to create your proxy server.

    ccproxy-6303488

  3. Once you've done that, go to the options menu and copy the IP and port number of your proxy on a piece of paper.

  4. Head to your PS4, go to Settings and select Set up a new internet connection.

  5. Choose between LAN cable and Wi-Fi. I recommend a LAN connection for the best results.

  6. Opt for custom settings.

    custom-1-1024x576-1-5097940

  7. In IP Address Configuration, choose Automatic.

    automatic-1-1-7751811

  8. Now, in DHCP hostname, select Don't specify.

    dhcp-host-1-1123273

  9. Leave DNS settings at Automatic.

  10. Set the MTU setting to Automatic.

  11. In Proxy Server, select Use.

    use-proxy-4469348

  12. Enter the address and port number you just wrote down. If the default port (8080) CCProxy does not work, try 808.

  13. That's all. Hit save and enjoy your higher speed.

Warning! As long as the connection is configured this way, PSN may malfunction with some functions of online games. I only recommend using this trick when you need to download something really fast. Once the download is complete, I advise you to close the proxy server and go back to a normal internet connection. It is also recommended to put the PS4 into sleep mode while the download process is complete, as it allows more resources for the download process.

Wraps up

Hope one of the above procedures has helped you improve your PS4 download speed. All of the above methods should work equally well on Ps4 Pro, Ps4 Slim y Ps4 Phat. If nothing helped, you should seriously consider upgrading your ISP plan or even replacing the old router. The game starts!
