This particular error pops up randomly and may interrupt your video conference due to your webcam sometimes working and sometimes displaying this error message. Users thought this issue was related to a specific app, but they realized that the same problem occurs regardless of what software you use.

First, this error code is related to your laptop's built-in camera and will not appear if you are using an external webcam. What's more, this problem often affects people who use Windows 10, especially after the creators update. Find out how to fix it by following the solutions below.

Solution 1: Troubleshooting Windows Store apps

Windows built-in devices and apps are a bit more difficult to fix because sometimes your system depends on them. Solution 2: download new drivers for your webcam

As usual, problems start showing up with any of your devices as soon as your drivers get too old. New computers with new applications will require you to use the current drivers because the old ones are simply not compatible with your device to run a newly updated application. Renewing these drivers is pretty easy, so let's get started.

  1. Scribe “Device administrator” in the search bar of the start menu and open it.

  2. Find the Imaging Devices section and expand the list by clicking the left arrow button.

  3. Find the name of your webcam. As usual, has the name of your PC manufacturer somewhere in its name.

  4. Right click and select the option “Uninstall device” to get rid of your outdated driver.

  5. Your webcam will remain disabled, so you won't be able to use it at all before updating your driver.

  6. Go to your PC manufacturer's website and try to locate your webcam drivers. It should be easy to handle.

  7. Download the driver from the web page and choose where you want to save it.

  8. Find the file you just downloaded and double click on it to open it.

  9. Follow the onscreen instructions to install a new version of your webcam driver.

  10. Restart your computer to apply these changes and see if the problem persists.

Solution 3: update windows 10 to the latest version

Some users claim that they needed to update Windows to the latest version before they could use their webcam properly. This may have something to do with the fact that your Windows update process was somehow interrupted and some of the system files related to your webcam may have been modified in the process.

  1. Windows 10 automatically update your PC by default, but if there are some errors about it, you can update windows manually.

  2. Open the settings app by clicking the gear icon on your start menu and navigate to the update and security section.

  3. Go to the Windows Update submenu and click the blue update history button.

  4. Find the latest update installed on your PC and copy the KB number (Knowledge base) which is usually in parentheses after the update name.

  5. If the update did not install correctly, you should be able to see something about it in the update history section.

  6. Navigate to the Microsoft Update Catalog by clicking this link.

  7. Paste the KB number you just copied into the search box at the top right of the page and click Enter.

  8. Find the update that did not install and click download next to the name and date.

  9. Double-click the file you just downloaded and follow the on-screen instructions to easily install the update.

  10. Restart your computer and see if your webcam works again.

  1. Open Settings by clicking the gear icon above the power button in the Start menu.

  2. Open the privacy section of the settings app and navigate to the camera submenu.

  3. On “Allow apps to use my camera hardware”, make sure the slider is on.

  4. In the section “Choose apps that can use your camera”, make sure the slider is on for video calling apps.

Solution 5: a simple registry review

When it comes to the Windows registry, It is important to note that any deviation from the instructions you have been given may cause unpredictable and irreversible damage to your computer. All the low-level settings of your computer are in this database and you can access any aspect of your computer with it.

Before I start discussing this, it's a good idea to back up your registry changes in case something unpredictable happens.

  1. Open Registry Editor by searching for it in the search box located in the Start menu or by using the Ctrl key combination + R to open the Run dialog box where you type “regedit”.

  2. Click the File menu at the top left of the window and select the Export option.

  3. Choose where you want to save the changes in your registry.

  4. In case you do any damage to the registry while editing it, just open the Registry Editor again, click File >> Import and find the .reg file that you exported earlier.

  5. Alternatively, if changes made to the registry are not imported, the system can be restored to a previous working state using System Restore. Learn how to configure System Restore and use it by consulting our article on this topic via this link.

Now that we have backed up our registry, let's start with the solution:

  1. Open the registry editor by following the instructions in step 1.

  2. Navigate to the following location in your registry by expanding the menus located on the left side of the window.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINENSOFTWARENWOW6432NodeNMicrosoftNWindows Media Foundation

  1. In this particular location, right-click on the Windows Media Foundation folder and select New >> Valor DWORD (32 bits).

  2. Name this registry key EnableFrameServerMode and hit ok.

  3. Double click on this new value and type 0 in the value data settings and click OK.

  4. Restart your computer and check if the problem is solved.

SUGGESTION: If none of the methods have solved your problem, we recommend that you use the Reimage repair tool, which can scan repositories to replace damaged and lost files. This works in most cases, when the problem originates due to a system corruption. Reimage will also optimize your system for maximum performance. You can download Reimage by clicking here
