DHCP is not enabled for Ethernet

Contents

The Internet makes use of the Dynamic Host Configuration Program (DHCP) to provide rapid distribution, automatic and centrally managed IP addresses to different devices that want to connect within a network. Additionally, a DHCP server is used to help configure the default gateway., the subnet mask and DNS server information on the device / computer.

Users experience the error message $ 0027 DHCP is not enabled for Ethernet $ 0027 when troubleshooting internet connection issues not working through Windows troubleshooter. This error usually occurs when the computer has been manually assigned an IP address and a subnet mask. The task of DHCP is to take control of this item and fix all IP addresses and assign them automatically. You may have access to the Internet at times, but if that direction is already taken, you will not be able to access the internet.

Additionally, you may experience this error with local area connection variations, Ethernet y Wi-Fi.

What is the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP)?

A DHCP server is used to automatically assign unique IP addresses to computers trying to connect to a network. In small companies and homes, the router acts as a DHCP server.

The procedure consists of several different steps:

  • Computer (client) request an IP address from the router (host).

  • The router checks the available free IP addresses and assigns them to the computer.

  • The two of you shake hands before the computer starts using the IP address.

Every time your device turns on and connects to a network, issues a DHCPDISCOVER to the router. Then the procedure begins and the IP address is assigned.

What causes the error message $ 0027 DHCP is not enabled for Ethernet $ 0027?

This error message is due to a simple malfunction of your computer. Some of the reasons are:

  • You are using a manual IP address entry for your computer to use in the network setup menu.

  • DHCP client service may not work on your computer. This client service helps your computer to record the IP address and keep track of DNS records.

  • Your network driver might be out of date or corrupted. This can happen after possible Windows updates.

  • The router may not work properly. A simple reboot generally solves the problem, since it clears all incorrectly saved settings.

Before starting with the solutions, make sure you are logged in as administrator on your computer and connected to your network properly. Verifique sus cables Ethernet, try replacing them or make sure you have enough Wi-Fi signal strength.

Solution 1: Obtain IP addresses automatically from DHCP

The most common reason users face this problem is because they have predefined the IP address they want to use.; so, DHCP mechanism has been disabled. This could conflict with your network settings if the manual request is not honored. We will navigate to the Internet settings, we will set both options to automatic and see if this solves the problem.

  1. Press Windows + R, scribe $ 0027control $ 0027 in the dialog box and press Enter.

  2. Once on the panel, click on Network and Internet> Center network and sharing. Now select the Change adapter settings option on the left side of the screen.

  1. Press OK to save changes and exit. Restart the computer and, after reconnecting to the network, check if the problem is solved.

Solution 2: enable DHCP client service

As mentioned in the introduction, DHCP client helps your computer register IP addresses and also update your computer's DNS records. If the DHCP client itself does not work on your computer, you cannot wait for proper DHCP operation on your computer over the network. We will make sure the customer service works properly.

  1. Press Windows + R, type »services.msc» in the dialog box and hit Enter.

  2. Once in the services, locate the DHCP client entry. Make sure it is running and the startup type is set to Automatic.

Solution 3: reset network settings

If the above two methods don't work, you can try to manually reset network settings on computer. We will delete your IP address and after resetting all parameters, will request an IP from the DHCP server again successfully. Make sure you are logged in as administrator before following this solution.

  1. Press Windows + R, scribe “symbol of the system” in the dialog, right-click on the app and select “Execute as an administrator”.

  2. Once on the elevated command line, run the following commands one by one:

ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /renew

  1. Restart the computer completely after restarting the network and check if the problem is solved.

Solution 4: restart the router

If you are using a home network with your router acting as your DHCP server, there is a chance that your router is malfunctioning or maybe in an error state. This happens from time to time and when it does, a simple power cycle generally fixes things. We will try to turn off and on both the computer and the router to be safe.

  1. Turn off the router and computer. Remove the main power supply and wait a few 10 minutes.

  1. Once the time has elapsed, reconnect the power supply and turn on both devices. Wait a few 4 more minutes before trying to connect to the network. Check if the problem is solved.

If the problem is still not resolved, you can refer to the following tips:

  • Make sure Windows is updated to the latest version.

  • If you are in an organization, it is better to consult your IT administrator, since the DHCP server is not a router and there may be other implications as well.

  • Update your network drivers after uninstalling them from device manager.

  • Roll back windows to a restore point after backing up your data if this issue occurred after an update.
