When older games like Doom or Masters of Orion are released 2 on newer operating systems like Windows 7, errors can be found in .dll files like the one we will focus on in this article: dplay.dll. One of the errors you may encounter is “DPLAY.dll is missing from your computer”. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem. ‘
Operating system incompatibility is one of the reasons why these applications and games may consider that the dplay.dll is gone even though it is present in the system. In other cases, this error appears because dplay.dll simply does not exist and will have to be available for the game to use.
In this article, We will fix this error by installing the old game with incompatibility mode, reinstalling the game so that the missing .dll file is available and copying dplay.dll to its correct location.
Method 1: install in compatibility mode
Windows compatibility mode creates the environment for old games or applications that are compatible with old systems to run on new ones. Before installing a game in this mode, you must know the operating system, the one you're running and the version of the operating system the game supports. Since very old games are compatible with Windows XP, we will assume you are using Windows 7 or more recent.
-
Right-click on the game's installer and click Properties.
-
Select the Compatibility tab and, in "Compatibility Mode", check »Run this program in compatibility mode to:«
-
Please select “Windows XP (Service Pack 2)” O “Windows Vista (Service Pack 1)” from the drop-down list. Better to check which operating system the game is compatible with and select the mode accordingly.
-
On “Setting (app)” O “Privilege level”, Mark “Run this program as administrator”.
-
Click ok.
-
Install the software and restart your computer.
-
Launch the game or application you have installed and check its functionality.
Method 2: copiar dplay.dll
You can copy dplay.dll to the System32 folder and try to start the game again. Normally, dplay exists as “dplayx.dll” and in the SysWOW64 or System32 folder. You need to find this dll file first before proceeding to download and copy another dplay.dll file, namely, if dplayx.dll does not exist on your system.
-
Open Windows Explorer and type »% windir% SysWOW64» in the location bar. If you are using a 32 bits, escriba »% windir% System32«.
-
In the search box, type »dxplay.dll«. You will find the search result as shown in the screenshot. In my case, It only exists in SysWOW64 and not in System32.
-
Right click on “dplayx.dll” and copy it. Type »% windir% System32» in the location bar and navigate there. Right click on the System32 folder and select Paste. Now, rename »dplayx.dl» to »dplay.dll«. If dplayx.dll already exists in this folder, create another copy and rename it to dplay.dll. You may need to grant you operational administrator rights.
-
Try launching the app again to see if it works.
Alternatively, can:
-
Download dplay.dll from here.
-
Open Explorer, type »% windir% System32» and hit enter.
-
Copy dplay.dll to this location.
Method 3: reinstall the game
If the problem is just a compatible game not running on your system, you may need to install the game. It is not necessary to uninstall the existing game to complete this process.
-
Take the settings of the game you want to reinstall.
-
Launch the installer and follow the reinstallation process.
-
Restart your PC and launch the game to check for errors.
