The Kraken headphones are one of the flagship headphones produced by gaming industry giant Razer.. It's big and when we talk about big, we mean about 27 centimeters when they are for work. Has a built-in virtual surround sound system, as well as superior sound quality. It is one of the most popular headphones on the market right now.
Despite being so popular and top-notch, the Kraken now faces a mic problem for quite some time. Numerous users report that they are unable to speak in the game or in other applications such as Skype. A prominent gaming platform where this problem is being experienced is Steam.. There are several different reasons why this behavior could come into play; The wrong drivers may have been installed or you may not have selected the Kraken as the default audio device. Unity has officially acknowledged this issue and is working to fix it. Until then, feel free to try our solutions.
Solution 1: Reverse Realtek High Definition Audio
Realtek is known for providing audio solutions to leading computer manufacturers and is recognized for providing excellent audio devices.. However, There have been many reported cases where the latest audio device drivers have rendered the Kraken's microphone unusable.. In this case, we can try to roll back the controller and see if this works for us.
-
Press Windows + R, type »devmgmt. msc »in the dialog box and hit Enter.
-
Once in Device Manager, expand the category »Audio Inputs and Outputs» and click on Realtek Digital Output and select »Properties«.
-
Once the properties are open, click on the tab “Controller” and select Revert controller if visible. If so, it means the driver has been updated and this may be the reason why the microphone is not working. If it is not grayed out, you can download another version from the internet and click Update driver and try to update it manually.
-
After updating the driver, restart your computer and check if the problem is solved.
-
If this method doesn't work, you can navigate to the same category in Device Manager, right-click on your Kraken headphones and select “Uninstall”. This will completely uninstall the headphones from your system. Now unplug the headphones and plug them back in and reinstall the drivers.
Solution 2: uninstall all Razer-related software
There are numerous cases where the software published by the manufacturer itself conflicts with the product.. This usually happens after a Windows update is installed on the computer. What we can do is try to uninstall the software and see if this does any tricks.
-
Press Windows + R, type »appwiz. cpl »in the dialog box and hit Enter. All applications installed on your computer will be listed here. Right click on all Razer programs and uninstall them one by one.
After uninstalling all software, restart your computer and check if the problem is solved. One particular piece of software known to cause problems is called “Razer Synapse”.
Solution 3: check if correct microphone is active
If the above two methods don't work, it probably means that the correct microphone is not selected as the current microphone device on your computer. If multiple microphones are available, the operating system may select another microphone as the default. You can check the properties of the headphones and make sure they are configured correctly.
-
Right-click on the »sound» icon in the taskbar and select »Properties«.
-
Now select the tab “recording”. All the recording devices on your computer will be listed here. Select Razer Kraken from the list of options, right click and set it as default device. Now disable all other microphones on your computer.
-
Press Apply to save the changes. Now right click on the microphone and select “Properties”.
-
Navigate to the Advanced tab and select the lowest default format available. It will probably be “2 channels, 16 bits, 44100 Hz (CD quality)”.
-
After making all the changes, restart the computer, reconnect the headphones and check if the problem is solved.
Solution 4: Run the application in elevated mode
It's not new to know that Windows user access control has its share of bugs and glitches. Before you begin to diagnose hardware problems, it is a good idea to try to run the application in administrator mode. In this way the application will have access to all the connected hardware.
-
Navigate to the application directory. In the case of Steam, the directory might look like the following.
“C: Program files (x86), common steam fumes on comedy night” (tixag 4)
-
Now click on the Compatibility tab and check the line Run this program as administrator.
-
Press Apply to save changes and exit. Restart your computer, reconnect your headphones and see if you can access the mic.
Solution 5: Check ports and hardware
However, if all the above solutions failed, it probably means there is a hardware failure. A hardware flaw not only covers your ports but also includes your mic connectors. You can play by connecting the jack to other audio ports. What's more, you must make sure the connector is in working condition.
You can also remove the USB part and replace it with a cable that has audio connectors.. This will ensure that all hardware works as expected and that there are no problems.
Solution 6: select the appropriate microphone in Realtek Audio Manager
In some cases, the microphone may not be selected correctly in Realtek Audio Manager. Therefore, in this step we will select it as a microphone. For that:
-
Open Realtek Audio Manager and click on the tab “Microphone”.
By clicking on the tab “Microphone”.
-
Here, click the drop down menu and select your microphone from the list.
-
Save the changes and see if the problem persists.
You should also open the app settings and see if the correct microphone is selected there. What's more, you can try connecting the headphones without a splitter to see if that fixes the problem.

By clicking on the tab “Microphone”.
