The error method 405 it's not allowed

Contents

The error 405 Illegal method is an HTTP response status code indicating that the server has rejected a method for the requested resource despite receiving and acknowledging it. Although technically it is a client error message (HTTP status code 4xx), the error is due to a server-side problem.

Unlike most other HTTP response codes in the 4xx category (client side), the error 405 Illegal method is considered a server-side problem. Then, has detailed information on why you are seeing this error and why it is probably the responsibility of the website operator.

Depending on the server that is handling the request, the HTTP message 405 what you will see may be different. These are some of the most common phrases:

  • 405 Method not allowed
  • HTTP status 405: this url does not support the HTTP GET method

Server-side broadcast

The most common HTTP error codes are shared between 4xx client errors and 5xx server errors. The error 405 Disallowed method is special because, although it is supposed to be a client side issue, the error is solely caused by a server-side issue one way or another.

Most of the time, the server is misconfigured and handles requests incorrectly; this will result in the error 405 Illegal method and other traffic routing problems. But even if the web server is the network object that returns the error as an HTTP response code to the client, we cannot definitively rule out that the customer's request is not causing the problem in some way.

Like most other status response error codes, the error 405 Illegal method is difficult to identify and correct. Given the complex relationship between the client, a web server, a web application and additional web services, determining the cause of this particular error could be a challenge for even the best web engineers.

What triggers the HTTP error 405?

Basically, the error 05 Illegal method recognizes that the resource requested by the client is valid and exists, but the client used unacceptable HTTP method. To put this information in perspective: the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) has a set of methods that indicate the possible actions that can be performed on the web server you are contacting. Then, a list of all possible actions is displayed:

  • OBTAIN: searches for the information associated with a specific URL resource.

  • HEAD: retrieves the header information linked to a URL resource.

  • POST: send data to this web server.

  • PUT: replaces the existing data for a particular URL with the new data currently transmitted by the client.

  • REMOVE: remove the data from the specified url.

  • CONNECT: established a tunnel to the server identified by the target resource.

  • OPTIONS: describes the communication options for the specified target resource.

  • TRACE: this method will trigger a loopback test on the way to the destination resource.

  • PATCH: apply partial modifications to a resource.

Note: Of the 9 methods, GET, HEAD, POST, PUT and DELETE are much more frequent than the others.

Depending on the purpose of the web server, your admin will configure it to allow certain methods and reject others. For example, if the website in question does not have any interactive content, it makes no sense to allow POST method on web server. If this method is not allowed and a client contacts the server with a POST request, error will be displayed 405 Method not allowed, informing the browser that the method is not allowed.

Method diagnosis 405 Illegal mistake

As we said before, the error 405 Illegal method indicates that the user has requested (from the server) a valid resource with an invalid HTTP method. This is precisely the reason why the error is technically on the client side: from the server's point of view, the customer just made an incorrect request. These are some of the most common scenarios that will trigger the error 405 Method not allowed:

  • The error appears due to a misconfiguration of the web server or the software components responsible for performing the action on the respective URL resource.

  • The website administrator banned the HTTP method used by the user agent, which is usually done for security reasons.

  • The error originates from the URL resource: a method is required which is not allowed by the web server.

  • The HTTP method is not allowed by the hosting provider used by the website administrator. This is common with the POST method: some hosting providers block the method when accessing HTML documents for security reasons.

How to correct the error 405 Method not allowed

If you find the error 405 Method not allowed on a certain website, there is almost nothing meaningful I can do about it. But since the most common cause of the error is wrong URL, you can check it again or visit the web project root directory and manually navigate to that particular resource.

Nowadays, most web servers are heavily protected to discourage inappropriate URLs. The problem can potentially arise because you are trying to access a private page that was intended for users with higher authorization. Don't bother trying common solutions for 4xx errors like page refresh, restart your network or disable proxy; will not work with the error 405 Method not allowed.

If you are having trouble with the issue and have made sure the URL is correct, all you can do is wait for the site administrators to resolve the issue. In case you urgently need that particular web resource, contact the site administrator and ask them to investigate the problem.
