The error “Display driver stopped working and recovered successfully” is a common problem that many people face, especially when they use their graphics hardware. Computer causes graphics card to stop responding due to low frame rate. The error is very vague and covers all kinds of problems.
There is no solution “definitive” for this problem and has been present in Windows operating system for many years. It may be a hardware problem, while some software factors also contribute. Check.
Solution 1: check power supply
One of the main reasons for this error is the power supply. Less power may be supplied to your video card and this may cause the problem. You need to make sure your graphics hardware receives enough power through the hardware. Other than that, we will try to change some power settings and see if this makes a difference.
-
Press Windows + R, type »control panel» and press Enter.
-
Once in the control panel, select »Large icons» from the drop-down menu at the top right of the screen.
-
Select »Power Options» from the list of available subcategories.
-
Click on »Change plan settings» present in front of the power plan. As of the Fall Creators update, there is only one power option present.
-
Click »Change advanced power settings» at the bottom of the screen.
-
Browse all options until you find »PCI Express«. After expanding it, also expands »Link State Power Management«. Make sure both options are set to »Disabled«. Press Apply to save changes and exit.
-
A reboot may be required to apply the changes. After reboot, check if the problem has been fixed.
Solution 2: install the default graphics drivers
Faulty graphics drivers are also known to be the cause of this problem. Drivers are the main driving force of any hardware connected to the computer. If they are damaged or outdated, can make the error appear over and over again.
We will start the computer in safe mode and remove the currently installed drivers for the display card. When restarting, the default display drivers will be installed automatically upon detection of display hardware.
-
Follow the instructions in our article on how to start your computer in safe mode.
-
Once started in safe mode, right-click the Windows key and select Device Manager from the list of available options.
Another way to start Device Manager is by pressing Windows + R to start the application Run and typing “devmgmt.msc”.
-
Once in device manager, expand Display Adapters section and right click on display hardware. Select the option to Uninstall the device. Windows will open a dialog box to confirm your actions, press OK and continue.
-
Now restart your device. Now check if the error has been resolved. If that is not the case, you can continue with the rest of the solution.
-
Go to device manager, Click on »Update Driver» and select »Search automatically for updated driver software«.
Your computer will automatically connect to Windows Update and search for the latest available drivers to install.
However, if automatic driver update does not solve the problem in question, you can try to download and install the drivers manually from the manufacturer's website. Manufacturers have all drivers listed by date and you can try to install them manually. Follow the instructions below to install the drivers manually.
-
Open your device manager as explained earlier in the solution and right click on your driver and select »Update Driver«.
-
Now a new window will appear asking if you update the driver manually or automatically. Select »Browse my computer for driver software«.
-
Now browse the folders where you downloaded the drivers. Select it and Windows will install the necessary drivers. Restart your computer and check if the problem is solved.
Solution 3: add registry keys
If the above two solutions didn't work, we can try adding two registry keys to your registry and check if this solves the problem. You need to back up the registry first so you can always restore if something goes wrong. Please note that the registry editor is a powerful tool, and making changes you don't know can damage your computer.
-
Press Windows + R, scribe “regedit” in the dialog box and press Enter.
-
Once in the registry editor, navigate to the following file path:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINENCurrentControlSetNcontrolGraphicsDrivers
Now you must add the keys relative to the type of operating system installed on your computer. If you have an operating system of 32 bits, follow the steps below. The one of 64 bits mentioned below.
-
Right click on any empty space present on the right side of the screen and select New> Valor DWORD (32 bits)
-
Put the name as »TdrDelay» and press Enter.
-
Now double click on the entry and set the value as »20» (twenty).
Now make another key following the same steps. Name the key as »TdrDdiDelay» and set its value as »20 (twenty)».
If you have an operating system of 64 bits, follow the steps below.
-
Right click on the empty space on the right side of the screen and select »QWORD Value (64 bits)«.
-
Name the new entry as »TdrDelay» and set its value as »20 (twenty)». Press Ok to save the changes.
Now make another key following the same steps. Name the key as »TdrDdiDelay» and set its value as »20 (twenty)».
Restart your computer and check if the problem is solved.
Solution 4: configurar Afterburner MSI
If you use MSI Afterburner on your PC, should check this solution.
-
After using MSI Afterburner, desinstale Afterburner y RivaTuner Statistics Server (you can choose to keep the configuration files).
-
Download the latest NVIDIA driver and select “Clean install”.
-
Open the NVIDIA control panel, click »Open Windows Sound Settings» and disable all NVIDIA sound devices. Close the control panel and restart the computer.
-
Download and install Afterburner on your computer.
Note: If you update your NVIDIA drivers in the future, first uninstall Afterburner and follow the procedure again. It seems that Afterburner conflicts with NVIDIA drivers and should not be present on your computer every time you update / install NVIDIA drivers.
Solution 5: Check the hardware
If all the above solutions didn't work, means there is something wrong with your hardware. There are several hardware problems that appear to be the cause of the problem in question. RAM may not be properly connected to your computer. Unplug and plug it in again. What's more, try plugging in another RAM and see if the error persists.
Another possibility is that you have a dirty or faulty PCI-E slot. You should try cleaning it or plugging your video card into another slot and see if this fixes anything. What's more, check thoroughly if the graphics card is properly plugged into its slot. If that is not the case, means you are not getting enough power. Not getting enough power causes the error.
What's more, check if the power requirement for your graphics card is sufficient. In many cases, there were too many other modules connected (What 6 additional units) that consumed energy. Because they consumed more energy, the graphics card was not getting what it needed.
Note: As we mentioned earlier, this error is a very generic error and can be caused by many reasons. It is not possible to list each of them here as the configuration of each computer is different. If you still can't fix it, you should go to the nearest technician to have your computer checked. You can always try to install a clean version of Windows before checking it.
